Hepatitis C - a cheat sheet
Hepatitis C is a liver disease that affects approximately 1% of Australians.
If left untreated it can lead to liver cirrhosis (scarring) in around 30% of those affected by the virus.
It can also lead to liver cancer in 5-6% of patients.
Chronic Hep C can often have very few symptoms in the early years, meaning that testing and screening is important to diagnose the disease early
Risk factors for contracting Hepatitis C include - injecting drugs and ‘homemade’ tattoos.
